“can’t give you more than that” (2024)
Broken granite, antique hinge, broken marble, broken tile, acrylic, shotgun shells, lego, broken cabochon, faux moss, faux flowers, Brillo pad, specialty pearl, pearl, chandelier crystal, shoelaces
The title of the piece “can’t give you more than that” comes from Sade’s song “Is It A Crime,” which emphasizes the value of love in its lyrics. Both “can’t give you more than that” and “the sky is full of love” are alters to queer and trans people who have passed away and belong to the anti-monument series. While traditional monuments glorify specific politics or ideals, the anti-monuments celebrate the lives of queer and trans people. This piece recontextualizes the value of discarded and broken items through the process of assemblage. In the top center of the piece is an expensive cabochon, which has broken down and become a low-value item.
